Free Public Lecture | Mindfulness in Everyday Life | 6 March 2013

The School of Education invite you to a public lecture by Dr James Carmody

Mindfulness in Everyday Life

John Lennon once sang about life being what happens to us while we are busy making other plans. Being fully present for our lives entails recognising the realms of experience in which our attention and awareness is getting caught, and those we are avoiding or missing. Mindfulness is a profoundly simple and accessible way of recognizing these ingrained habits of attending; a recognition that has been shown to result in lasting improvements in well-being and quality of life. Dr Carmody will describe his work on the psychological and neural processes associated with these everyday perceptual changes.

Dr James Carmody is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Preventive and Behavioural Medicine at the University of Massachusetts. Dr Carmody, a New Zealander, has studied and practiced Zen, Tibetan, Therevada and Advaita traditions in a number of countries. He teaches mindfulness courses with the goal of conceptualising mindfulness in a straight forward, jargon-free and accessible way
