A Chance to Tell the Commission about Mental Health and Addiction Services in Your Area

The Mental Health Commissioner’s purpose is to enhance mental health and wellbeing for all New Zealanders. The Commissioner focuses on society’s overall response to mental health and wellbeing and on services for people experiencing mental distress and/or addiction.

The Commissioner works to give voice to the needs and perspectives of people experiencing mental distress and addiction challenges and their families/whānau.

Every month the Commissioner visits a District Health Board area and holds meetings with interested people, including school counsellors, government agencies, NGOs and staff from service providers including clinicians, and managers.

What happens with this information?
After the meetings the Commission will provide a summary of our findings to the Chief Executive Officer of the District Health Board.  They do not reveal the identity of anyone who talks to them.

A summary of this visit’s findings will be on the Health and Disability Commission’s website in the May 2013 at http://www.hdc.org.nz/about-us/mental-health-and-addictions/monitoring-and-advocacy. The information also helps the Commissioner understand the important issues in relation to mental health and addiction services. The Commissioner advises the Minister of Health on the implementation of the mental health and addiction strategy.
