Free Seminar: Managing Grief at Holiday Times | Birkenhead 18 Nov 2014

  • Date:     Tuesday 18th November
  • Time:     12 – 1.30pm
  • Venue:  The Grief Centre, 92 Hinemoa St, Birkenhead, Auckland

For many people living with loss and grief, Christmas, holidays, and anniversaries can be a painful time and often approached with dread. They may be times of intense loneliness, sadness and emptiness. Perhaps it is a time to think about the people around you who have faced a major change, loss or grief. What could you do to support them at this time? What is helpful? What is not helpful?

This seminar will give you the opportunity to meet and talk with others who may be experiencing similar feelings, as well as gaining some practical suggestions on ways to get through this difficult time.

This seminar will be useful for those who have experienced a loss, those who have friends or family experiencing change and loss, as well as those in the community who may work or support people affected by grief and loss. Feel free to bring a friend.

The workshop will be facilitated by Mallika Krishnamurthy, from The Grief Centre, an educator by profession. The workshop will finish with time for a cup of tea and the chance to talk with others.

There is no charge for this seminar, however you are invited to help The Grief Centre to support others through the holiday season and throughout the year by making a donation on the day or on their website www.griefcentre.org.nz

Support Programme for Carers Starts at Grief Centre 21 Feb 2013

SEASONS FOR GROWTH: A Support Programme for Carers to explore the effects of change and loss in their lives

The Grief Centre, in conjunction with Seasons for Growth,is running another group for Carers.  Two similar groups were run during 2012 and great feedback was received, with participants encouraging others to attend. Some of the comments included:

“Well worthwhile.  You can get as much or as little out as you put in.  Grief and loss is not about death! It is about dealing with change.”

“Will make you think quite differently and is well worthwhile.”

Seasons For Growth is a peer support programme which assists people of all ages to understand and manage the changes they experience when a significant loss occurs. This is an education programme—it does not provide counselling or therapy.  The programme runs for two hours each week, over a four week period.  It will be led by Bronwyn Alleyne, a trained Seasons for Growth companion, who is also a qualified counsellor.

The group will be held on

  • Thursdays from 10 – 12pm
  • Start date:  February 21, 2013
  • At 92 Hinemoa Street, Birkenhead

Cost:$25, which includes a copy of the programme manual

Who is this programme for?

This group is for family members caring for someone else in the family (usually a partner, but could be a parent) who has a long term/chronic illness.  Sometimes the person is working and also providing a caring role.  So, it’s not for people working in the area, or for those who are bereaved (The Grief Centre run different groups for this).

If you are interested in attending the group, or would like more information, please contact The Grief Centre on 4181457, email info@griefcentre.org.nz,or phone Bronwyn on 021 1277738.
