The Toi Ora Artists Collective proudly present IMAGINE.
These artists provide a unique framework that brings together a range eclectic imagery informed by life experience and translated into personal narrative through art. The artists use a range of media including painting, ceramics, photography, mixed media, creative writing and printmaking. 1.    “Mental Notes” Premiere at World Cinema Showcase – Saturday 31 March 2012 at 6:00pm

“Mental Notes” is a feature-length documentary from award-winning filmmaker Jim Marbrook which weaves together testimonials of five survivors from the “very bad old days of mental health care in New Zealand”.  One of those interviewed is Toi Ora alumnus and “Blue Messiah” author Peter Finlay. “Mental Notes” premiere screening on Saturday 31 March at 6pm at Rialto Newmarket, Auckland.  “Mental Notes” at World Cinema Showcase – http://worldcinemashowcase.co.nz/mentalnotes.html. “Mental Notes” trailer – http://vimeo.com/38674385

2.    “Recent Work” by Life Drawers of Toi Ora – Thursday 5 April to Friday 4 May 2012

Toi Ora’s Thursday morning class of Face & Figure Drawing, tutored by Shannon McKewen, is a bit of an institution.  Now you get to see why with a selection of this class’s Summer term output on display in our gallery.

Opening night is on Thursday 5 April, 4pm onward at Toi Ora Gallery, 6 Putiki Street, Grey Lynn.

END OF TERM SPECIAL:  Opening night will also see the return of Toi Ora’s legendary end-of-term soirees so brace yourself for music from our house band, the inimitable Toi Ora Express, and nibbles and drinks to celebrate.

3.    Toi Ora feature in “Open Door” on TV3 – Saturday 7 April 2012 at 10:25am

Morningside Productions’ “Open Door” series turns its attention to Toi Ora – “a unique creative space in the heart of Auckland city for adults who have experienced mental illness”.  In this episode, the show meets some of the artists who have been helped to realise their artistic potential in an environment where the mental health ‘label’ is put aside.

1.  Andrew Blythe and James King in “Creative Species” at ROAR! Gallery, Wellington – Thursday 1 March to Thursday 31 March 2012

Andrew Blythe and James King fly Toi Ora’s colours in this group exhibition of vibrant, fresh and exciting art being made in creative spaces around Aotearoa.

2. James King in “What’s On Your Plate?” at Papakura Art Gallery, Papakura – Saturday 3 March to Saturday 7 April 2012

A group exhibition where James King joins Amy Mackinnon, Eileen Leung, Fuyuko Akiyoshi, Matthew Crookes, Richard Orjis and other artists as they explore the idea of a plate as a metaphor for the act of sharing. What’s On Your Plate? will run alongside another group exhibition, Colour of Distance.  The curators of What’s On Your Plate? are ReThink Grant recipients.

Both exhibitions will open on Saturday 3 March at 10:30am, at Papakura Art Gallery, 10 Averill Street, Papakura.

PAPAKURA BONUS:  Toi Ora Express to perform at Papakura Art Gallery – Thursday 8 March 2012

You read it here first:  our in-house band, Toi Ora Express, will be performing at the Papakura Art Gallery on Thursday 8 March from 12:30pm to 1:15pm.  This performance is in conjunction with the What’s On Your Plate? exhibition.

The Express is an eclectic collective of singers and musicians that meet weekly at Toi Ora to play together and support each other.  This free performance includes a range of acoustically-driven rock, country and folk music certain to add a smile to your day.

3. Andrew Blythe solo exhibition “New Works” at Corban Estate Art Centre, Henderson – Friday 9 March to Sunday 15 April 2012

New Works sees Andrew Blythe use his brush as a means of communication, using marks, words and colours as an expressive language. New Works will run alongside solo exhibitions by Arie Hellendoorn and Shelley SimpsonRicha.

The solo exhibitions will have a joint opening on Thursday 8 March at 6:00pm, at Corban Estate Arts Centre, 426 Great North Road, Henderson.

4. Richard McConnochie and Chris Leavins showcase in “Paintings” at Toi Ora Art Gallery, Grey Lynn – Tuesday 13 March to Friday 30 March 2012

Paintings sees Toi Ora painters Richard McConnochie and Chris Leavins showcase their works.

Opens on Tuesday 13 March at 5:00pm, at Toi Ora Art Gallery, 6 Putiki Street, Grey Lynn.

5.  Andrew Blythe solo exhibition “Recent Work” at Darren Knight Gallery, Sydney – Saturday 3 March to Saturday 31 March 2012

Andrew Blythe’s work travels across the Tasman where his works’ sense of landscape leave an impression on the intellect rather than the eyes.  Recent Work is presented in association with Tim Melville Gallery – www.timmelville.com.
