The Like Minds Big reTHiNK

Making Stigma-Reduction a World-Wide Event

The Like Minds team at Mind and Body Consultants and The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand have partnered to create The Like Minds Big reTHiNK. The Like Minds Big reTHiNK  is a global challenge for the world-wide community to get involved in producing destigmatising creative, public events.

The Like Minds Big reTHiNK builds on the successes of previous reTHiNK Grant projects like the 24-Hour reTHiNK Theatre Challenge from Titirangi Theatre in 2010 and the reTHiNK Possible Worlds multimedia stage show from The Literatti in 2011. In 2012 it is being taken to the next level. This year, everyone can take part, regardless of where they live or what their level of experience is.

Early in March, a dedicated website will be launched and submissions will open for any kind of creative “script” that reduces stigma – a “script” can be any publishable creative piece. It might be a dance piece, a series of performance poems, visual art, a one-act play, a short-film or anything in between. The best scripts will be chosen for The Big reTHiNK – the 2-hour stage-show that kicks off the challenge with a charity awards gala and series of public performances. The remaining scripts form a pool for Regional reTHiNK Event Organisers to stage in their own communities during the month of October. People can then register to perform, direct or be a crew member for The Big reTHiNK or a Regional reTHiNK Event happening near them.

The Big reTHiNK will be professionally staged atAuckland’s newest, most modern performance space, Q Theatre, onQueen Street. The entire space is disability accessible – even the lighting cat-walks, so this really is a project that anyone can volunteer to be part of. The Big reTHiNK from October 2nd  – October 6th will warm the community up for Mental Health Awareness Week as well as launch and promote the Regional Like Minds reTHiNK Events taking place from October 7th – 30th.

Already MindAustralia in Melbourne and Like Minds allies inNew Yorkhave registered to host an event in their region – so The Like Minds reTHiNK Challenge is already shaping up to be a global event that reaches the widest audience ever.

All Tangata Whaiora are encouraged to spread the word amongst your communities to get involved. Anyone can submit scripts, approach local theatres, gallery spaces or cinemas and get them to sign up to host a Like Minds reTHiNK Challenge event or link your planned Mental-Health Awareness Week activities with the challenge for added exposure.

Additional sponsorship is being sought to fund prizes, venue costs and the publication of The Big reTHiNK scripts as a Like Minds resource for the future, so if you or anyone else you know might be keen to be a sponsor please let us know!

The new reTHiNK website goes live in a mere few weeks and all guidelines and submission forms will be available there. In the meantime, please visit www.rethink.org.nz or contact likeminds@mindandbody.co.nz for more information.

The reTHiNK Challenge Gears Up for 2012

It’s official! Like Minds will be running a reTHiNK challenge again in 2012, and they’re looking for a theme.

Visit www.rethink.org.nz  and “leave a reply” to comment on your idea for a performance event “Theme” or “Catch Phrase” that will challenge the myths and stereotypes of Mental Illness (in 2010 it was “M.A.D. – It’s a matter of degree”, in 2011 it was “We are all human beings navigating the maze of life”).

They will be inviting submissions from venues, writers, performers of any persuasion, directors, filmmakers, comedians and crew from everywhere in March 2012 so make sure you are signed up (top right of their website) to receive updates so that they can invite you to get involved when the time is right.

Please let your networks know about this exciting opportunity.

Proudly supported by Mind and Body Consultants Ltd and the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand as part of the Like Minds, Like Mine programme to reduce stigma and discrimination.
