Free Seminar: Managing Grief at Holiday Times | Birkenhead 18 Nov 2014

  • Date:     Tuesday 18th November
  • Time:     12 – 1.30pm
  • Venue:  The Grief Centre, 92 Hinemoa St, Birkenhead, Auckland

For many people living with loss and grief, Christmas, holidays, and anniversaries can be a painful time and often approached with dread. They may be times of intense loneliness, sadness and emptiness. Perhaps it is a time to think about the people around you who have faced a major change, loss or grief. What could you do to support them at this time? What is helpful? What is not helpful?

This seminar will give you the opportunity to meet and talk with others who may be experiencing similar feelings, as well as gaining some practical suggestions on ways to get through this difficult time.

This seminar will be useful for those who have experienced a loss, those who have friends or family experiencing change and loss, as well as those in the community who may work or support people affected by grief and loss. Feel free to bring a friend.

The workshop will be facilitated by Mallika Krishnamurthy, from The Grief Centre, an educator by profession. The workshop will finish with time for a cup of tea and the chance to talk with others.

There is no charge for this seminar, however you are invited to help The Grief Centre to support others through the holiday season and throughout the year by making a donation on the day or on their website www.griefcentre.org.nz

Family Resilience and Suicide Risk Seminar 15 May 2012

Skylight is partnering with researchers around the country to bring you the latest findings in the areas of grief, loss and change.  You will learn how to turn research and knowledge into everyday practice.

Family resilience, coping and suicide risk: research and practice

  • Date: 15 May 2012
  • Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm
  • Location: The Mercy Centre, 104 The Drive, Epsom, Auckland
  • Cost: $70 (includes afternoon tea and handouts)

This seminar is for anyone who works with children and families!

In 2010, The Psychology Centre undertook a study entitled Understanding families and suicide risk as part of the New Zealand Suicide Prevention Action Plan 2008-2012.  John Fitzgerald will share the findings of the study which drew information from families that had experienced a suicide attempt, a completed suicide or that included a young person with a mental health concern.

The study identified communication, caring and an attitude of acceptance and forgiveness as key family strengths. The results suggest that social and health providers can strengthen family resilience against suicide risk.

Facilitator John Fitzgerald, PhD. John obtained his qualification in clinical psychology from the University of Birmingham (England) in 1988 and is director of The Psychology Centre in Hamilton. Most of his clinical and research focus is in the areas of child, youth and family psychological health, the application of psychology in primary health care settings, and monitoring change and measuring outcomes of clinical interventions. John and the team at The Psychology Centre have recently completed a research project exploring the role of family dynamics in the recognition, assessment, and management of suicidal young people. Previous research has explored family debriefing after suicide, adolescent help-seeking, and the responsiveness of Emergency Departments to adolescent mental health issues. John is an experienced supervisor and trainer, regularly contributing to the Waikato Clinical Psychology training programme, conferences, and workshops on a range of clinical, professional and ethical issues.
