Ethnic Dance Ballet to Raise Funds for Shakti Ethnic Family Services 27 May 2012

Shakti’s Ethnic Family Services, based in Manukau Central, is looking forward to their first grand fundraiser, The Queen, a production organized voluntarily by a group of doctors led by our Chairperson Dr. Shanthi Selvakumar), and friends and family members of Shakti team.

The event is on Sunday 27 May at Auckland Girls’ Grammer, Dorothy Winston Auditorium, Howe St, CBD.

This fundraiser production is a unique cultural experience as it features culturally-diverse dance, motion and drama pieces to introduce a classical-meets-contemporary twist of a Bhara Ratnam performance chronicling the empowerment journey of a woman.

And who is the Queen? You’d have to come to the show to find out!

This event will help raise funds towards the Family Centre, including the Youth Unit that promotes advocacy on some of the most pressing issues affecting youth from immigrant communities such as early forced marriage and honour-based violence as well as working with schools and young people on family violence prevention.

All ages

Venue is accessible

Tickets are going for $25per person (student/senior), $50 (VIPseating) and $100 (for a group of 5)

Kindly get in touch with Shasha on 021 840034 or 09 262 0487 to get tickets to this show. You may also purchase tickets directly from the Shakti office at 18 Manukau Station Rd (inside Manukau Medical Centre).

The Production
Brought to stage by young professionals united by a common cause – the evening features a montage of pieces with the central theme of the empowerment of women. Opening with a waita by the first half is highlighted by a short play, produced by Prayas Youth Theatre, that uses stylised physical theatre to showcase the female victim’s journey from oppression to empowerment.

‘The Queen’ itself is a dance ballet set to partnership of western and classical Indian music and choreographed in the ancient Indian classical Dance form of Bharatha Natyam. Bharatha Natyam itself derives its name from Bhava (meaning expression ) Raga (meaning melody) and Thala (meaning rhythm). It is through these modes of expression that the dancers present a contemporary production with its roots in Indian mythology to tell the story of a strong, independent queen of yesteryear.
